SEZ (Special Economic Zones).  SEZ has two types namely, SEZ developers and SEZ units.  Today, we are not dealing with developers.  We are going to explain only about SEZ units.  However, SEZ developers are the people who provide infrastructure facilities and places of operation for SEZ units.  These are deemed to be outside the customs territory. 

SEZ units who want to register as SEZ have to get their place allocated in one of the SEZ parks that are functioning.  Further, the final agreement between the SEZ developer and SEZ unit will be only after SEZ status is approved to the unit.  SEZ registers all units which want to avail of SEZ benefits, however, after the approval, except STPI units.

EOUs (Export Oriented Units):  EOU registers manufacturing services and IT-enabled services and has benefits of its own prescribed for exports.  EOU unit can be set up anywhere in India with the level of domestic sales alone.  EOU units address the requirement of larger space and can also set up in their own places. 

STPI (Software Technology Park of India):  STPIs are the units dedicated to software technology.  STPI authority sets up STPI parks at various locations with the required facility of IT infrastructure.  The units take space in this park just like SEZ.  However, this is restricted only to software related businesses.  STPI has benefits of its own and also a portion of its trade is permitted in the domestic area.  However, for ease of functioning IT-enabled services will register themselves under EOU.

EHTP (Electronic Hardware Technology Park):  Electronic hardware technology park of India was especially started for electronics and hardware to boost exports.  EHTP builder gives space to EHTP units with required infrastructure facilities.  The benefits are prescribed under the Act.  This is more or less governed by the principles of SEZ and STPI and specific to the electronic and hardware industry.
